Celebrate our School's Great 88!
My Dear Friends,
Looking back over 18 years of serving St. Mary’s Parish School, I remember many celebrations. We have spent many years celebrating the start of the new school year with a school theme, an opening Mass, new goals for the new year. Throughout the year, we celebrate Catholic Schools Week, family groups, new Communicants, Red Ribbon Week, Fat Tuesday, May Crowning, and we have always closed the school year with our famous end-of-the-year prayer service where each grade gets passed up to the next teacher.
This year in June, our closing prayer service will hold many emotions for the students, faculty, and parents. There will be many final farewells. It is difficult to imagine none of us will be returning in August. Some people will continue to see each other while others may not. Or for a few years, some families will remain close but in time, start to drift apart.
I bet that if I were to speak to alumni of St. Mary’s School, they would say there still is something very special that connects them to this place-this home away from home. They would be right. For those of us who are leaving the school, whether prematurely or because our last child is graduating, our departure feels sad.
St. Mary’s Parish School is too wonderful to leave it with our grief, tears, sadness, and heartache. How can we say farewell to a special school that has been an investment and taught so many children? This school and all that it has done for parents and children deserves a great finale—it deserves to smile from the hallways inside to the red brick outside.
So let’s plan a celebration that speaks to the young and
the old! I can’t do it alone. I am asking long-time parishioners, alumni,
parents, and relatives to search in their hearts for action—join a new
committee. If many different voices come together for this work, it will be
a great success. Let’s speak with one voice as we say good bye to St. Mary’s
school.
If you are interested in forming this committee with me, please call the school office. Perhaps you can attend a few meetings…at least share some ideas. We will take your name and begin to develop our list. We will begin to hold meetings in April.
Most sincerely,
Nancy Coughlin

Saint Mary’s will join many other parishes throughout the Joliet Diocese by establishing its own Saint Vincent de Paul conference. The overall goal of the Conference is to bring Spiritual and Material support to those Parishioners and West Chicago residents who are in need, suffering: distress, loneliness or just trying to achieve a more stable life. The specific goals of St. Mary’s conference are to:
Membership in the Conference is open to any parishioner and we will especially need 10-12 committed bi-lingual volunteers to be the initial responders to the calls for help that will come in to our Saint Vincent DePaul hotline. Hours will be flexible to accommodate volunteer schedules and training will be provided by the Saint Vincent de Paul Society. If you would like to join the Conference or become a volunteer, please contact Deacons Bruce,Luis, Sr. Maria, the parish office or e-mail Trini Cantu at tcantu2@yahoo.com. A meeting for potential members and volunteers will be held on March 29th at theParish center at 7:00 p.m. |
