Room Representative Resources
We Appreciate the
Efforts of Our Room Reps!
Room Representatives have the opportunity to meet the principal and the classroom teachers during the Teacher's Tea at the beginning of the school year. Please be sure to follow the procedures that the principal suggests at that meeting, as well as to honor your teacher's guidelines and preferences about classroom parties. Below, you will find several sample notes and forms to help you stay organized throughout the year.
Room Representatives at St. Mary's typically serve a two year term. They should attend PTO meetings, which are held on the first Tuesday evening of each month. There are approximately eight PTO meetings per school year. PTO meetings are not held during Advent or Lent. (See calendar for details.)
A Room Representative's chief goals should be to help ensure the following:
-
That communication with teachers and families is effective.
-
That classroom parties are safe, fun, well organized, and focused on the students.
-
That parents have the opportunity to contribute to and participate in classroom celebrations and other activities, such as the Fall Fun Fair.
Protecting God's Children
All adults working with children in the Diocese of Joliet are required to attend and be certified in the Protecting God’s Children program. Certification sessions, which require a three hour time commitment, are held throughout the year. Local sessions will be listed on our school calendar.
Calling Tree
For School Closings and Other Key Announcements
Room representatives play a key role in ensuring that our Calling Tree
functions successfully. When school must be cancelled due to inclement
weather or other unforeseen circumstances, or when other critical
information must be communicated quickly, Room Representatives will be
contacted immediately. Each Room Representative should then contact
the families of the "only and oldest" students in their classes, as
indicated on the calling tree sheets provided at the beginning
of the year. Room Representatives who will be unavailable due to work,
travel, etc. should arrange for a substitute, and inform the office and the
PTO President.
Classroom Parties
Room Parent Tip: Remember to Bring a Camera!
For
students in Preschool through Fourth Grade, there are generally three
classroom parties during the school year: Halloween, Christmas, and
Valentine's Day. Fifth through Eighth Graders typically replace the
classroom Halloween party with a group party and dance. The teacher
you are working with will let you know of her preferences for classroom
parties. Teachers will often offer valuable input into such things as the
sorts of games and snacks that they prefer for their students. Once
you have solicited your teacher's input, you will want to communicate with
other parents, seek volunteers, and send reminders as party days approach.

Wearing Halloween costumes to school, gobbling
sweet treats in the middle of the day, creating a one-of-a-kind
Christmas ornament for the family tree, carefully preparing a
special Valentine's Day card for each classmate (and the teacher,
too!)--all of these exciting moments make classroom parties
particularly memorable for children.
